Compared to LDMOS, its higher power density and wider bandwidth are particularly suitable for high power RRU and fulfil 5G requirements.
To meet the need for lighter and smaller RF filters in base stations whilst RRU is now a common form factor in the mobile radio network, RRU normally installed at the top of an antenna tower or a rooftop of a building, has a specific loading limit.
Minimizing heat and interference Another design being considered is based on the integration of the PSU within the RRU to reduce the RRU's size and weight. In this architecture, the PSU shares the heatsink with the PA.
Cables are another important factor. Today, multiple pairs of low-gauge cables are used to bring -48 V power to the tower-top RRU while minimizing voltage drops across them. In addition to being expensive, these cables also are heavy, which is problematic if an operator wants to lease space on sites that are already near weight capacity.
The most common solution to minimize that ripple and noise is to use linear power supplies cascaded to the DC-DC output rail. LDO based solutions come at the disadvantage of impacting power efficiency losses which becomes more challenging to manage in systems having multiple AFEs.
With multi-technologies (GSM, UMTS, LTE) RRUs from multi operators sharing an antenna tower, the weight of RRU is an important deployment factor. Reducing the weight and size of RRUs gives the benefits of easier installation and faster rollout.
