With the development of hydraulic components and the growing size of wind power generation, hydraulic technology has gradually been applied in wind energy, such as the hydraulic pitch system 2 listed in Table 1, the hydraulic braking system, 3 and hydraulic transmission system 4, 5 depicted in Table 2.
New type of hydraulic energy storage for wind energy will effectively utilize and smooth wind power. Hydraulic transmissions with water for storage or thermal energy developed for offshore application is promising but has a long way to go for the component constraints.
Fifth, considering the water-based hydraulic offshore wind power, the problem is that the water hydraulic pump has not yet achieved the megawatt level, and internal leakage is more serious, so the efficiency will be lower, the seawater will corrode components, and marine microorganisms will be polluted and so on. Seen as Tables 2–4.
At present, the hydraulic technology for the medium or low power level wind turbine can be commercialized already. And the large company merger or cooperation of wind power plants and key hydraulic parts has the potential to promote the application of hydraulic technology in MW grade wind power plants.
There are some common problems in the application of hydraulic drives in wind turbines. Firstly, the leakage, especially when developing offshore wind turbines, will pollute the marine environment. Secondly, the development status of hydraulic components is limited.
With the development of large-scale wind power generation and offshore wind energy, reducing the nacelle weight and the gear failure rate is increasingly important. Hydraulic transmission is characterized by its flexible layout and transmits large energy with small volume and weight, which suits the demands of wind power generation.
