With the growing urgency of the energy crisis, hybrid power offers an advanced means of energy optimization, where electro-hydraulic hybrid systems, such as electro-hydrostatic actuators (EHAs), represent a novel opportunity for hydraulics.
To solve the problems of electric energy recovery, Shang proposed a hydraulic energy recovery model, as shown in Fig. 15 (c). An accumulator is employed to store energy, while a directional valve controls on/off switching between the accumulator and the hydraulic cylinder.
Hydraulic energy recovery solves the problem of motor overheating. Nevertheless, the added structure increases the weight of the EHA and makes it difficult to control. It is also hard to ensure excellent recovery rates because hydraulic energy is less efficient at high speeds.
The energy flow between the electric motor, the hydraulic pump, and the hydraulic cylinder is illustrated in Fig. 8 (a), expressed as a bonding diagram . The electrical energy stored in the motor is converted into mechanical energy by the gyrator, which is designated as “GY.”
Electrical recovery is simple to design and easy to control without additional components and energy storage,, . However, the circuit is susceptible to damage due to the unstable recovery voltage caused by the uncertainty of the external load.
Energy recovery is a novel idea that can further enhance operational efficiency and energy utilization. Fig. 15 shows four flowcharts to illustrate the direction of energy transfer for the drive and energy recovery modes. In the drive mode, energy comes from the battery and is transferred to the hydraulic pump via the electric motor.
