Looking further into the future, breakthroughs in high-safety, long-life, low-cost battery technology will lead to the widespread adoption of energy storage, especially electrochemical energy storage, across the entire energy landscape, including the generation, grid, and load sides.

The rise in renewable energy utilization is increasing demand for battery energy-storage technologies (BESTs). BESTs based on lithium-ion batteries are being developed and deployed. However, this technology alone does not meet all the requirements for grid-scale energy storage.
In this Review, we describe BESTs being developed for grid-scale energy storage, including high-energy, aqueous, redox flow, high-temperature and gas batteries. Battery technologies support various power system services, including providing grid support services and preventing curtailment.
Energy storage is one of the most important technologies and basic equipment supporting the construction of the future power system. It is also of great significance in promoting the consumption of renewable energy, guaranteeing the power supply and enhancing the safety of the power grid.
