The bulk chemical composition of the Solar System is essentially that of the Sun, which is made-up of H (74%), He (24%) and a small fraction (2%) of heavier elements, including rock-forming elements such as, for example, O, Si, Al and Fe.
The chemical composition of the Solar System can be studied through terrestrial methods. At the present time, all studies must be conducted on Earth, but it is clear that samples of extraterrestrial bodies should soon be available for study.
The solar chemical composition is an important ingredient in our under-standing of the formation, structure, and evolution of both the Sun and our Solar System. Furthermore, it is an essential reference standard against which the elemental contents of other astronomical objects are compared.
It includes basic facts about the chemical composition of the different bodies in the solar system, the major chemical processes involved in the formation of the Sun, planets, and small objects, and the chemical processes that determine their current chemical make-up.
1. INTRODUCTION The solar chemical composition is a fundamental yardstick in astronomy, to which the elemental abundancesofessentiallyallcosmicobjects, betheyplanets, stars, nebulaeorgalaxies, areanchored. The importance of having accurate solar elemental abundances thus can not be overstated.
The new solar chemical composi-tion is supported by a high degree of internal consistency between available abundance indicators, and by agreement with values obtained in the Solar Neighborhood and from the most pristine meteorites.
