Global energy storage installed capacity grew 93.8% YoY in the first half of 2024, coming in at 64.9 GWh. A total of 57.3 GWh came from utility-scale storage (including C&I), up 118% year-on-year. Meanwhile, 7.6 GWh came from the residential sector, up 7.7% year-on-year.
In the first three quarters of 2024, newly operational non-hydro energy storage installations reached 20.67 GW/50.72 GWh, representing year-on-year growth of 69% in power capacity and 99% in energy capacity.
By the end of 2023, China had completed and put into operation a cumulative installed capacity of new type energy storage projects reaching 31.4GW / 66.9GWh, with an average storage duration of 2.1 hours. The newly added installed capacity in 2023 was approximately 22.6GW / 48.7GWh, which is three times that for 2022 (7.3GW / 15.9GWh).
Projects with storage durations of 4 hours or more accounted for 15.4% of total installed capacity, a rise of about 3 percentage points compared to the end of 2023. Projects with durations of 2–4 hours accounted for 71.2%, while those with durations of less than 2 hours made up 13.4%.
In terms of application scenarios, independent energy storage and shared energy storage installations account for 45.3 percent, energy storage installations paired with new energy projects account for 42.8 percent, and other application scenarios account for 11.9 percent. The installed capacity of renewable energy has achieved fresh breakthroughs.
