The clean, renewable power generated will feed into Chile''s Sistema Interconectado Central (Central Interconnected Grid) the main national power
Transmission and distribution are also controlled by private sector players, albeit subject to stricter regulation. Chile's power grid is mainly composed of a single interconnected grid known as the Sistema Eléctrico Nacional (SEN).
In SWITCH we divide the Chilean power grid into 23 load areas. Load areas (or nodes) are defined by a mixture of electricity and geographic criteria. For Chile, the four load areas in the northern grid (the Sistema Interconectado del Norte Grande, or SING) represent the geographical division used by system operator CDEC-SING.
The clean, renewable power generated will feed into Chile's Sistema Interconectado Central (Central Interconnected Grid) the main national power grid. The project activity supplies zero-emissions electricity to the grid, thus avoiding greenhouse gases emissions by displacing fossil-fuel power plants.
It does this with an exceptionally high spatial and temporal resolution to represent the grid operation for Chile. The objective function utilized in SWITCH minimizes the net present value of investment, operation, transmission and distribution costs of the entire electric grid.
According the CNE, Chile ́s installed capacity by the end of 2020 reached 24,644MW on the SEN, which contains 99.3% of the country's capacity. To that we must add 58MW in the southern SEA grid and 107MW in the far-south SEM grid. Recent changes in the makeup of the SEN have been dramatic.
While in 2015 the country had 12% non-conventional renewable installed capacity, that number has grown to 26,4% (an exact up to date figure can be found here) htp://energiaabierta.cl/visualizaciones/capacidad-instalada/ Nowhere has the change been starker than in photovoltaic generation. In 2013, Chile had 11MW of installed solar capacity.
