An arc flash in a cabinet will concentrate the energy toward the opening which can increase the arc flash energy by a factor of three. Therefore, even though the aforementioned calculations are conservative, they may be accurate for an arc flash within a battery cabinet.
Battery cabinets come in many forms. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the greatest risk of arc flash is in cabinets in which top-terminal containers are installed.
Another major consideration is that, in many or most cases, there is limited places on a battery where an arc flash is possible. Often an arc flash calculation is done on the dc system without any regard to if the initiation of an arc is even possible.
Without an interrupting device there is no current method to determine the arc duration on a battery system. There has been testing to prove that an arc flash on a dc system can last more than 2 seconds, but that does not necessarily mean more energy, because the extinction mechanisms are not taken into account.
In the 2012 version, guidance on arc flash hazards in dc systems was added. This addition has caused concern in the stationary battery industry since arc flash PPE in the stationary battery world has been mostly ignored up to this point.
A review of dc arc flash test data taken since Annex D.5 was put into the 2012 NFPA 70E, has shown the maximum power method to overpredict incident energy compared to actual measurements [7, 8].
