Energy storage can play an essential role in large scale photovoltaic power plants for complying with the current and future standards (grid codes) or for providing market oriented services.

China has emerged as a global leader in pumped storage technology, which is the most mature solution for large-scale, long-duration energy storage. By the end of 2024, the State Grid Corporation of China had 40.56 GW of operational pumped storage capacity, with an additional 53.48 GW under construction.
Nonetheless, it was also estimated that in 2020 these services could be economically feasible for PV power plants. In contrast, in, the energy storage value of each of these services (firming and time-shift) were studied for a 2.5 MW PV power plant with 4 MW and 3.4 MWh energy storage. In this case, the PV plant is part of a microgrid.
On the other hand, from the market and economics perspective, ES can help large scale PV power plants to provide firm dispatchable capacity. In this direction, the following services can be identified i) Capacity Firming and ii) Electric energy time shift .
