PV generation systems have very low inertia; thus, integrating large PV plants as a substitute for the conventional generators decreases the inertia of the bulk power system. Consequently, the system would not be able to manage the frequency fluctuations caused by frequent load demand changes.
The paper specifically investigates the impacts of very large-scale photovoltaic (VLS-PV) generation on the power system dynamic performance including rotor-angle and frequency stabilities. For this purpose, a detailed equivalent dynamic model for a multi-unit VLS-PV system and corresponding controllers are developed.
Abstract: The increasing renewable energy penetration together with the price reduction of photovoltaic modules is supporting the development of photovoltaic power plants connected to the medium and low voltage grid. Many concerns are emerging about the electrical system stability when it is connected to renewable sources.
In particular, large-scale solar-photovoltaic (PV) generation systems (e.g., >10 MW) are becoming very popular in power grids around the world . This will displace a significant share of the conventional synchronous generators (SGs) while transforming the power network landscape.
1. Introduction Solar photovoltaic (PV) generation is one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources (RESs) in the world, with an annual growth rate of 24% between 2010 and 2017 . In particular, large-scale solar-photovoltaic (PV) generation systems (e.g., >10 MW) are becoming very popular in power grids around the world .
