Uruguay's model demonstrates that a just energy transition is attainable, emphasizing public-social capacities and a commitment to sustainability. Uruguay is a renewable energy world leader. During 2017, the total amount of its electricity supply came from renewable sources (only 2% was thermal energy).
Uruguay's wind installed capacity surpasses energy demand. Uruguay exports energy to its neighbors. There is concern in Uruguay's wind sector for future years.
While these projects are impressive, it is the country's creation of larger energy infrastructure changes that have made the most impact. In the decade leading up to 2017, forward-looking policies and projects took Uruguay from having virtually no wind power to nearly 4,000 megawatts of installed capacity.
Key findings reveal that Uruguay has significantly reshaped its energy matrix, with renewables accounting for a very significant amount since 2017, reducing carbon emissions and bolstering energy sovereignty.
In a way, Uruguay's strategic position in the energy industry in the region can very well serve as an energy reservoir when its neighbors are in need; the country will then need to rethink the future investment agenda in wind power.
