This in other words implies that in a weak grid, the electrical distance of the POI from the source of fault level contributor (or equivalent synchronous generator representing the grid) increases. Therefore, the POI becomes more vulnerable to voltage instability issues.
Similar analysis on the the challenges of integration of voltage source converters (VSCs) into weak power grids by investigating the resonance between DC-link voltage control (DVC) and synchronizing control phase-locked loop (PLL) has been presented in [ 19 ].
Several studies have investigated the adverse impact of reducing system strength on grid stability, which have shown that reduced system strength may compromise the voltage stability of a grid [ 11 - 13 ]. This is mainly due to the fact that the integration of IRESs are depleting the SGESs from the grid.
On the other hand in [ 16 ], it has been shown through a case study for Great Britain test system that increased integration of IRESs and the location of the integration also affects the grid strength and voltage stability.
Therefore, with the increasing penetration level of IRESs, the grid (system) strength is depleting, which is making the power grids weak. The reduction in grid strength can lead to several operational challenges and issues for the grid operators; especially, the voltage stability [ 7, 8 ].
Factors such as available fault limit (AFL), feeder length and grid nature (resistive or inductive) affect the IRES power injection to weak grids. This paper presents a detailed analysis on the impacts of these factors on the POI voltage and the IRES power injection to the grid.
